William, also known as BJ is a damn good video editor. If you don’t know, ask Division East.

Name 5 videos whose editing impressed you:

Girl – Yeah Right!
Anything by Justin White
Static II
Few and Far Between
Habitat – Mosaic

What got you into video editing?

I’m in the communications program in my school and when i first started taking it i started getting really into filming and editing. i downloaded the editing program but the problem was i had no footage or a camera to film with. so i used to take compressed clips that people would send me and just edit them around to make a montage. then i got my first camera and I’ve been filming ever since. I’ve been doing this for almost two years now.

What software were you using when you started?

Adobe Premiere 7.0

What are you using now?

Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0

Describe Perserverance and state what makes it not just another skate video

Well i made a video about 2 years ago when i first started, nothing crazy just a fun video for a little group my friends and i had made. when i started taking filming more seriously about a year ago i decided i wanted to make a video. i didn’t set a date or who will be in it or anything. about around October 06 i started brainstorming for a video to make. i wanted to put together everything i filmed in the past year and showcase some of the best north jersey skating around. i basically took the people that i had the most footage of and asked them if they wanted to have a part. from then on we all filmed hardcore everyday and night until about 2 days before the premiere. it took me around a month to edit it all since it was an hour long and i was constantly adding new footage in. I wanted to get everyone involved in my video, even my friends that don’t skate. That’s where i got the idea to have my friends from my communications class to host the video. I’ve never seen anything like that where it was like a talk show and then they cut to a segment so i decided to try it out. it was a success cause they had people laughing at the premiere of the video. overall it was a very successful video and I got to make back some money from selling copies. I think I sold around 55 copies.

How many hours of footage did you go through to make Perserverance?

Oh god, probably twenty-something one-hour long tapes I went through.

What kind of look or vibe were you going for while editing footage for “Perserverance?”

I was basically just trying to get everyone involved and trying to make it funny yet serious at the same time.

What are some common mistakes you see in videos today?

I see some videos like Jereme Roger’s Neighborhood that use some sort of really crappy editing program, like the slow motions are all choppy and stuff like that. Also some editors just throw a crazy song in the background and throw clips in with it and don’t care. Some give some slow skater with tight pants a really upbeat fast ghetto song which doesn’t go good at all.

If you had a limitless budget what would your videos resemble?

My videos would have the same attitude except I’d have much better equipment and I’d be traveling the world with my friends to film and have a good time.

Where would you like your editing skills to take you, basically what is your dream job?

Anything that keeps me involved with skateboarding. I love it and I’d love to make a living out of something in the business.
